Potla chicken

Ingredients

  • Chicken – 1 kg (cut into small or medium pieces)
  • Onion – 2 (sliced)
  • Pearl onions – 10(crushed)
  • Ginger paste – 1 tbsp
  • Garlic paste – 1 tbsp
  • Green chilly – 4 (slitted)
  • Tomato – 1 (chopped)
  • Chilly powder – 1 tbsp
  • Coriander powder – 2 tbsp
  • Garam masala – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves
  • Coconut oil – 2 tbsp
  • Salt

 For the marinade:

  • Ginger paste – 1 tbsp
  • Garlic paste – 1 tbsp
  • Chilly powder – 1 tbsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 tbsp
  • Garam masala – 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt

Preparation Method:

  • Marinate chicken pieces with the ingredients mentioned above.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add curry leaves, sauté onion and green chilly until onion turns brown.
  • Add ginger – garlic paste and crushed pearl onions, stir for 5 min or until raw smell disappears.
  • Add all powders and stir for some time.
  • Add chopped tomato, cook until it melts.
  • Add the marinated chicken, mix well with the masala in high flame for 5 minutes.
  • Switch off the flame.
  • Take banana leaf, wash it and hold the leaves at the ends. Show it over direct flame and move the sides till leaf changes its color. We are doing this so that leaf is easy to fold without worrying about tear.
  • Take the leaf and spread chicken masala. Make a potla (kizhi) and tie with a twain.
  • Keep this potla in a steamer and steam it for 10 minutes.
  • Serve hot.
